This is a easy trick which exist only for resident of Second Life. Most of older resident should know about this but for a new comer you might not know what preview grid is all about.
When you log in to Second Life you always connect to the Main Grid by default but Linden Lab has provide another grid in purpose for testing their beta software it’s know as Preview Grid.
Who should care about Preview Gird?
If you’re just regular user who comes to chat, play or travel around Second Life then preview grid is not for you.
But.. if you are more advance user who involve in some work or design:
- You build a house with prim and texture in-world.
- Design sculpty product from 3D software.
- Animator who create animation file to use with gesture or AO.
- Have to upload sound file to embed into you product.
- Want to help Linden Lab find bug and testing their beta software (like Collada Mesh)

Preview Grid can help you save money!
Whatever you work is done in Second Life it mostly require you to upload file from your PC. It could be texture image, sculpty texture, animation file or sound file and Second Life charge L$10 every file uploaded.
Imagine when your first design your sculpty building. How many time did you re-upload texture again and again just to find a correct resolution or try different style of the roof?
Preview Grid can help you save L$ because system will give a free L$ to every account connected. You can test your design in Preview Grid by upload tons of sculpty, textures, animation and sound files without losing real money at all!
But don’t get a wrong idea, those free L$ is available only inside Preview Grid. It can’t transfer so it really has no real value except to spend inside preview grid.
Let’s connect to Preview Grid
1. Open Second Life Client
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+G on your keyboard to show a grid list menu.
3. Change grid name to ADITI if you want to connect to Preview Grid.
4. Use normal Avatar’s Name and Password to connect.
If you successful connect to Preview Grid you will notice you have a new L$ fund available immediately. Feel free to spend it on upload file for testing your work as much as you want!
*** To connect back to default Main Grid change grid name back to AGNI.
More about Preview Grid..
- Preview Grid is exist for testing purpose there’re several version of Second Life Grid running in Preview Grid.
- Preview Grid’s content and building is created from old backup version of Second Life Main Grid. This also included everything in your inventory should be a backup version from a week or several month ago.
- Only old enough account can connect to Preview Grid since its run with old database. This mean the avatar account that created yesterday will not be able to connect to Preview Grid.
- Only a few island can be access and teleport in Preview Grid.
- Preview Grid is separate from Main Grid completely you can’t transfer L$ or any object between two grid. You can work in Preview Grid for testing your product until you satisfy and then you still need to go back and upload final product in Main Grid.
- Help Linden Lab test their software if find any bug you can report them at jira.secondlife.com

There is another way to test your stuff on the regular grid: some third party viewers like Phoenix allow you a temporary upload of a texture.
You need to replace it with a permanent upload once you are satisfied with your texture, because it will have disappeared on your next login, but in the mean time you can try all kinds of variations of the same texture.
This applies to normal as well as sculpty textures.
