On May there’s a news from SL Blog about the future of Second Life. One of the feature announce is that they will support mesh import in near future. This feature will allow us to upload 3D Model directly without need to use sculpty texture anymore.
Today there’s a news from NWN and SLOG reveal that the COLLADA is a new file format that Linden Lab will allow 3D designer to upload into Second Life when this feature avaliable.
THIS IS BIG NEWS! I can tell you especially for content creator so keep your eyes open for more information.
Updated: From lastest SLCC2010 Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale promise to make mesh import go into pubilc beta by the end of this year. Read more information from Philip Rosedale’s Second Life Roadmap at SLCC.
Updated (#2) Next Steps for Mesh Import, an official announcement from Second Life blog arrived. Mesh is coming very soon! There is a Second Life wiki page dedicated to Collada Mesh. You should check them out often.
Great thing are coming! consider Opensim developer also have plan to support Mesh in the future too.
At this point, I would like to announce my suspend from this blog temporary. I’m too excited about this mesh feature and ready to jump in study more about Blender so I can create better mesh content and write better tutorial for everyone.

So is it possible to import Maya Mesh to Second Life?
I’m a 3d Modeler, and I would love to import mesh in there.
@Jay Yes, but you must login to Preview Grid with Mesh Beta Viewer because it’s still in beta test period.
Inside preview grid you can now upload mesh object in collada format (.DAE) with no cost It’s free to upload while in beta test.
